Workshop: Sound Design in Ableton Live with Tatum Wilson
Covering essential creative techniques and tools with Ableton Live, this workshop will examine different ways in which you can deepen, transform, and polish your songs using sound design. Introducing how different applications of effects, sampling and audio editing can become a part of your creative process, join to see how Live’s built-in functionality can be used to add detail to compositions and give an edge to a mix. For producers and musicians of all genres — explore the many ways in which a DAW can be your instrument! A free online workshop presented by Lawnya Vawnya and Unpossible NL. BIO Tatum Wilson is a producer, composer and audio engineer working in Montreal, Canada. His work examines how the interplay of sound, perception and technology can elicit moments of collective memory, immersion, and healing. As ‘operaa’ he creates a delicate blend of ambient and experimental music, with production that melds nuanced textures, abstract melodies and deep, enveloping bass. Currently, he is participating in an artist residency at the Société des arts technologiques (2023-2024) and works as a team member of World Creation Studio. His debut EP ‘Falling To The Point Of Floating’ was released by Barcelona-based label xenonyms in 2021, and he frequently works and collaborates on projects spanning film, music and digital art. Workshop: A Crash Course in Recording with Clare Follett
Dive into the world of recording with multi-award-winning musician, producer and recording engineer Clare Follett. This in-person workshop is designed to prepare you for the upcoming RPM Challenge, and is aimed at musicians or enthusiasts to give them practical advice on how to make their recordings as good as they can be. Workshop presented by Lawnya Vawnya and the Unpossible NL. Recorded at Record Time Productions in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. https://www.recordtimepro.com/ BIO: At 22, Clare Follett is already a seasoned veteran on the East Coast music scene. You may have seen her perform with the likes of Nick Earle and the Reckless Hearts, the Janet Cull band and countless others, or as a solo artist performing her original music. She debuted her self-produced solo album ‘Neck Deep’ at age 15, followed by her sophomore self-produced ‘Reclamation’ at 18. Clare has also worked as a producer and/or recording engineer on projects for Rosemary Lawton, Kelly McMichael, Quote the Raven, Kelsey Arsenault, Kellie Loder, Jenny Mallard, and many more. Over the course of her solo career, she has received nine MusicNL nominations, three MusicNL awards, and four Newfoundland and Labrador Arts & Letters awards for her songwriting. She was also selected as an ECMA Break Out Artist in 2018. Virtual Workshop: Live Electronic Performance with Francis Dawson
An introductory overview of the basic components of a live electronic music performance with instructor Francis Dawson. This workshop will briefly touch on midi controllers and other hardware, but will mainly focus on Ableton Live as a powerful tool for live electronic performance. This workshop was delivered over zoom on April 12, 2023. FRANCIS, aka SSSLO, is a producer, DJ, and one half of dub/psych/dance outfit, CUERPOS. Based in St. John’s, NL, Francis draws influence from his upbringing in Newfoundland and his Chilean roots. His production style is constantly evolving but is strongly influenced by Latin and Caribbean music, as well as contemporary electronic music. Francis’ DJ sets are varied and can range anywhere from house and techno to global club sounds. While his taste is eclectic, there is a through-line: connecting the dots between the Latin diaspora in contemporary electronic music. *Ableton Suite is available as a free trial for 90 days, and Ableton Intro is available for $100-120 CDN (https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/live/).

Workshop: Making Rock by the Rules with Jacob Cherwick
A workshop about setting rules for yourself to get the creative gears turning. Five-time MusicNL award winner Jacob Cherwick is a musician, audio engineer, producer and songwriter living in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. He’s a member of Ukrainian Speed-Folk group Kubasonics and emo/math rock favourites Swimming, and his work with hardcore band Banana Vacuum (a group fronted by Jacob’s then-8-year-old brother made for the RPM Challenge) garnered attention from NPR Music, Bandcamp Weekly and CBC. Workshop: Mixing & Mastering Essentials with Sarah Shin
This workshop will go over the key concepts and principles needed to mix and master a song. We'll introduce the essential tools of an audio engineer and will go over, step-by-step, an example of each process. There will also be a brief Q&A at the end. Sarah Shin is an audio engineer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, electronic artist, and music producer based out of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. She loves helping local/independent artists manifest their creative visions through sound design and music. She often uses interdisciplinary knowledge in eclectic ways to come up with innovative technologies and processes in music production and sound art. She also has an experimental electronica project under the alias Moon Apple, and is always up for a good collaboration or helping out at a community event. This workshop will focus on software based synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and DAWs with an emphasis on exploration over more technical aspects of sound design. Projects include HRT, a live focused EBM-influenced band, and soundtrack for acclaimed short film “Grown In Darkness” directed by Devin Shears. A workshop on how to put the finishing touches on your recordings. Workshop leader Michelle LaCour is an audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist living and working in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. After earning a Bachelor of Music in piano and historical musicology from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2013, she went on to complete a Masters of Music in sound recording at McGill University, graduating in 2017. Workshop: Composing Music with Found Sound
This workshop will cover methods for collecting and composing with sounds found in the world. Developing pieces of music with found sound is fun, inspiring, and can lead to unique results that define the character of your work. This workshop is designed to demonstrate a wide range of tools that can be used to record and process found sounds as well as to highlight music that has been created with these techniques. BIO: Charles Harding (he/him) is an emerging sound maker living in Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal and studying electroacoustic composition at Concordia University. His current focus spans various artistic disciplines including algorithmic composition, soundscape design, creative coding, VR/AR and, more recently, interdisciplinary collaborations in weaving and sound with textile artist Emily Blair. Over the past several years he has had opportunities to showcase research, projects and collaborations involving immersive and interactive audiovisual installations at the likes of ImageFest in Colombia and Visiones Sonoras in Mexico.
