Following their recent artist residency at Lawnya Vawnya, the members of Loopstitch (Kate Read and Michelle LaCour) are excited to offer a workshop on experimenting with sound using pedals, live looping, and improvising with acoustic instruments and electronics. When: March 30th, 2024 at 2:00pm Where: Lawnya Vawnya headquarters, 4 Clift’s Baird’s Cove, St John’s NL The workshop is open to all levels of experience and ability, for adults and youth age 12+. There will be opportunity to experiment with techniques – feel free to bring your voice or a small instrument! Loopstitch is an experimental musical duo based in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. Kate Read and Michelle LaCour perform improvised music for amplified viola, accordion, and synthesizers, expanded upon with found sounds, pedals, and loops. As devoted educators, Kate and Michelle both have ample experience giving workshops and leading group activities within the community. Since beginning her experiments with amplified viola and pedals, Kate has been asked by many local violinists and violists to lead workshops explaining her process. In late 2023, Kate developed and gave such a workshop in the UK at the Centre for Young Musicians, and at various schools for children with disabilities. Michelle has given many workshops on a diverse range of topics including recording, mixing, and mastering music; live sound reinforcement; location sound recording for film and televisions; and audio post-production.

We respectfully acknowledge the land on which we gather as the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk, whose culture has now been erased forever. We also acknowledge the island of Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) as the unceded, traditional territory of the Beothuk and the Mi'kmaq. And we acknowledge Labrador as the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Innu of Nitassinan, the Inuit of Nunatsiavut, and the Inuit of NunatuKavut. We recognize all First Peoples who were here before us, those who live with us now, and the seven generations to come. As First Peoples have done since time immemorial, we strive to be responsible stewards of the land and to respect the cultures, ceremonies, and traditions of all who call it home. As we open our hearts and minds to the past, we commit ourselves to working in a spirit of truth and reconciliation to make a better future for all.
