A live RENDERS show includes lush layers of effected vocals over “stoner-pop” synths beats and riffs to create a fusion of sensual psychedelic sounds and upbeat dance music. One might here the influence of Bjork, Robyn, Prince, St Vincent and Kylie Minogue. Her sound has also been called “sensual” and “good makeout music”.
RENDERS is the electro/chillwave/R&B project of Kelly McMichael (Rouge, Kelly McMichael and The Gloss, Gentleman Reg) which began as part of the “Record Production Month” challenge in 2013. Kelly also completed a politically charged RPM album this year fuelled by Trump-related rage. Exploring feminist themes and inspired by the riot grrrl movement, Kelly uses sounds and characters that are more playful than her rock singer songwriter voice for Kelly McMichael and The Gloss.
Raised in Peterborough ON, Kelly completed a Fine Art degree in Guelph ON where she began performing regularly. Kelly then spent time in Toronto playing keys with Gentleman Reg and co-fronting synth-pop group Rouge, and had the pleasure of sharing the stage with other prominent Canadian artists such as Allie X, Sarah Harmer, The Hidden Cameras, Kashka, Blimp Rock and Devon Sproule. Because variety is the spice of life, Kelly recently started the Riot Grrrl Tribute band, “Thelma & Louise” with St. John’s locals Krista Power, Mara Pellerin and Meg Harnum, and she continues to write new material for The Gloss and RENDERS. The Renders EP (July 2016) caught the attention of bloggers in Brooklyn, Australia, Germany and The UK and the smooth, slick sounds have been accompanied with two D.I.Y. music videos. More is sure to come out of the material created for this year’s RPM.
